Meeting the Teacher

Emily starts Kindergarten this year and yesterday was her pre-assessment day. That's where she goes and meets her teacher and the teacher asks her all kinds of questions to see where she is academically. Emily was so excited to meet her teacher, Mrs. Herman. When the testing started, it was really hard for me to sit there and hear her say she didn't know some words that she really does know, but knowing how much it bugs Kindergarten teachers when parents interrupt, I was good and didn't say anything. After she was all done, her teacher said she did wonderfully so I guess I might just worry too much. It's going to be a great school year!

Emily with Mrs. Herman; she was so excited to meet her--she even chose her first day of school outfit for it. Now what to wear on the first day? :-)

Summer

I realized this morning that this is my last Sunday without having school the next day. Summer is officially over! This summer was very low key, but still wonderful! It was full of trips to--
Discovery Gateway

Lagoon
Trafalga
A visit from my dad
T-Ball
Soccer
Lost teeth
An unfortunate trip to the hospital
a family reunion, time spent together as a family, and, of course, the girls playing with friends,
and many, MANY water parties.

What a fun summer it's been. We look forward to meeting you again in just 9 short months! :)

Tooth #2

Right after Em lost tooth #1, the tooth right next to it got loose. This time her adult tooth was already coming in. The night it came out I wiggled it, she pulled away and my fingernail caught on it and pushed it forward and it started to bleed. So started the dramatics! After about 10 minutes I calmed her down and she was ready to go up to bed. Little did we know that she went up to the bathroom and bravely wiggled and pulled until she pulled it out herself (she even handled the blood okay!) We were so proud of her for being brave.
She then wanted to write a note to the tooth fairy (see picture below) and then finally (way after her bedtime by now) went to bed. The tooth fairy was more reasonable this time with the amount of money that was brought. At this rate, it looks like Emily will truly be singing "All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth" in a few months.
Emily's tooth right before it came out

Emily's cute note: She sounded out most of the words herself. In case you can't read it, it says: I luv my tooth but i know you have to take it. Love, Emily
She had to draw the tooth fairy also on the back of her note. P.S. The tooth fairy wrote back and told her how lovely her note was and gave her an A+ :-)

Party in the USA

My girls love the song, Party in the USA by Miley Cyrus. It's the first song they've requested that I buy for my iPod. Enjoy!

Robertson Reunion

Over the 24th of July weekend, my family had a Robertson Reunion in Montrose, Colorado. (Where's that?, you ask--I said the same thing :-) ) We had my mom, my sister and her family, and my little brother with his wife. Our oldest brother couldn't come, which was sad, but hopefully next time! My brother-in-law's brother has a ranch there where we got to ride horses, ride 4-wheelers, do a little shooting (just the adults) and thoroughly enjoy ourselves. The pictures really tell it best!
As usual, one of the highlights of the trip for the girls is swimming in the pool. If you look really closely at this picture, you'll see that Ashley's eyes are closed. She was so cute, jumping to Daddy but only if her eyes were closed.

Just chillin' with the cousins
Kenny taking aim (we didn't get a picture of me doing it--oh well) He was awesome! Which was cool and scary at the same time.
We all got on the horses. This is a classic picture of my mom riding her horse--she's nervous!
Kenny kept leading his horse the wrong way, but did well overall
Ashley rode with the owner of the horses first, then later she rode on her own in a teeny saddle just her size. It was so neat!
Emily was a natural. It was her first time and she was amazing with the horse (the horse was wonderful too!) and looked like she had been riding her whole life!

That night we played some games: Guesstures, Catch Phrase and the Robertson traditional game of Pinochle. The girls made it for awhile, but finally it got too late and they konked out with their blankies. So cute though!

When life throws you a curveball

Yesterday we had something happen that as a mother, NEVER would want to happen. My dad is visiting us and he had some of his diabetes medicine in his pocket and when he picked up his shorts they fell out without him noticing. Ashley was upstairs playing and she found the medicine and she ate one. We know it was only one, but when I called the poison control center, they said that this certain medicine in children can make their blood sugar go super low and could make it so she couldn't breathe so they said I had to go to the Emergency Room. We did.
So began a long day. When we got there they tried to give Ashley an IV for blood and medicine. This did not go well. The ER tech poked her twice and got nothing! Ashley was so brave and didn't even cry! They were so impressed, but they spoke too soon. They tried a third time and this time got a little blood, but they were moving the needle all around her arm. Ashley was done and started crying and saying "I'm done! I want to go home!" As a mother it was so hard to not be able to take the hurt away and know that this needed to happen, but I don't know who cried more: Ashley or me. After they got enough blood, they had to take the IV out and I just prayed they wouldn't have to do it again. (Luckily they didn't)
After testing her sugar (it was normal) she had to eat some charcoal balls mixed in pudding. With bribery I got her to eat about 1/2. The doctor came back in and said that they had read up more about the medicine and saw that the most critical time was in about 12 hours. Since that would be in the middle of the night, they told us that Ashley would have to be admitted to the hospital and stay there overnight. We then went upstairs to the Pediatric floor and went in our room and just waited. The nurses kept coming in and laughing because Ashley was her normal self--running around, playing, talking, talking, talking. At times I wondered, what are we doing here but it was better safe then sorry.
Ashley had to get poked (this time in the finger or toe) every 2-4 hours and each time her blood sugar came back great and normal. In the end, her blood sugar remained normal. Everything was alright and we got to come home this morning.
What happened yesterday was a total accident. It was no one's fault and in the end everything was okay and Ashley was fine, but it was very scary for the first few hours not knowing what might happen to my little Ashley. I'm so thankful that everything turned out alright and that we can learn from this for the future. I'm grateful today for doctors, nurses, insurance, prayers, and family. I also learned that when life throws you a curveball, you just have to run with it, whether you want to or not, and hope and pray that you can hit it out of the park. :)

A combination of charcoal and Oreos--yum
I woke up in the middle of the night (one of many times) and Ashley had turned herself all the way around in her bed. I couldn't resist: I got out of bed, got the camera and got a picture before I turned her back around.

Daddy's Surprise Day

When getting ready for our garage sale we were going through boxes and I found a whole bunch of picture books that I had when I was a little girl. Emily's loved reading them with us. One of the books was a Family Circus book called Daddy's Surprise Day. All the kids throw their dad a surprise party, not on his birthday, just because they love him. Well, in true Emily form she wanted to have a surprise day for her daddy. She bugged me for a few days and finally I gave in. She made him gifts (like the kids did in the book), we put up streamers and signs (just like in the book) and we made him a cake (just like in the book). She was very bummed that we had no party hats because in the book they did. :-)
Daddy got home and was very surprised and very happy that his girls threw him his surprise day. Love you Daddy!!
